Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver BC

Located in Yaletown in downtown Vancouver, this community arts and recreation centre offers a wide variety of arts programs, sports and recreation facilities for the community.

The Roundhouse Community Centre hosts many cultural events including Vancouver art exhibitions, theatre, music and dance festivals. Every year, the contemporary theatre festival, Push, as well as the Vancouver International Dance Festival, hold many of their performances and events at the Roundhouse. The Annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival has arts and crafts workshops at the Roundhouse related to the festival themes.

A little slice of Vancouver history can be found in the glass pavilion attached to the Roundhouse building. Here on public display is Engine 374 which pulled the first transcontinental train into Vancouver in 1887. This very important event in Canadian history marked the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway, linking Canada from east to west. The original buildings of the Roundhouse facility were once used to house and service steam locomotives that brought goods in and out of Vancouver.

Roundhouse Must-Sees:

Engine 374 Pavilion: Explore the Canadian Pacific Railway Engine 374 and discover its historical journey. Notice the bricks with engraved names that line the floor of the pavilion? These represent all the donors who contributed $20 each to help raise funds to fully refurbish the engine for Expo '86. If you come on Queen Victoria's birthday, the engine is displayed outside the pavilion along the remaining steel train tracks. Volunteers from the Westcoast Railway Association are onsite to interpret the history of Engine 374 to the public on a daily basis.
