Top 5 Hotels & Motels in Vancouver BC

sheraton-hotel-vancouver-bcAs a popular tourist destination, Vancouver is home to numerous hotels and a few motels around the city.

The type of hotel you'll find and the price you'll pay to stay there varies, depending on the area of Vancouver you want to call home for a few days.

Vancouver's finest and most expensive hotels are located in the downtown core (near Canada Place, Pacific Centre Shopping Mall and in Yaletown).

Hotels near the Cruise Ship Terminal at Canada Place include the luxurious Pan Pacific (300-999 Canada Place) and the Fairmont Waterfront (900 Canada Place Way), where rates start at about $350 per night.

hotel-vancouver-fairmontIn the area near the Pacific Centre Shopping Centre (701 West Georgia Street), nearby hotels like the Four Seasons (791 W. Georgia Street) and the Hotel Vancouver (900 West Georgia Street) offer visitors hundreds of luxury rooms and suites.

If you want a more intimate setting, downtown Vancouver is also well known for its posh boutique hotels. Historic boutique hotels like the Wedgewood (845 Hornby Street) - which was named on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List in 2010 - and Le Soleil (567 Hornby Street), have been remodeled into modern suites.

Everything in Yaletown is more chic and more expensive, and the hotels are no exception. Yaletown is an area of Vancouver that takes up only a few city blocks, and has a few boutique hotels that are busy year-round: the Opus Hotel (322 Davie Street) and L'Hermitage Hotel (788 Richards Street) where the average room starts around $250 per night.

Robson Street is a prime shopping location, and also home to many more Vancouver hotels, which are less expensive than the ones located near Pacific Centre. Here, you'll find hotels like the Rosedale on Robson (838 Hamilton Street @ Robson) and the Blue Horizon Hotel (1225 Robson Street), both starting at about $135 per night.

Budget Hotels in Vancouver

There are two main areas that offer budget accommodation in Vancouver: near the airport (YVR) and in East Vancouver. East Vancouver is bordered by Burrard Inlet, the Fraser River, and the city of Burnaby, however, most budget hotels are located on Main Street and Kingsway, with a few on East Hastings near the PNE.

There aren't many budget hotels located in downtown Vancouver, but you will find a few near the Granville Street Bridge, like the Best Western (718 Drake Street) or the Burrard Inn (1100 Burrard Street), where you can find a room for around $100.

Vancouver has a couple of motels, and they are located on the east side. However, before you book a room at the Palms on Kingsway or the City Centre Motor Hotel on Main Street, remember that you get what you pay for.

Many visitors have tried to save a few dollars and been unpleasantly surprised after booking at hotels or motels like the Budget Inn Patricia Hotel (403 E. Hastings Street).

While the hotel is clean, it is located in the heart of the Downtown Eastside, notorious for its prostitution and drug trade. If you're just looking for a cheap place to sleep without any frills, you can rest at these motels for between $60 and $90 per night.

Our Selection of Vancouver Hotels

How do you know the place where you're laying your head for the night is in good shape, close to where you need to go, or even clean?

Many travel guides and reviewers use the star system to rate hotels so travelers know exactly what to expect before they arrive. The hotel rating system is a system of one to five stars, which looks at various criteria such as cleanliness, amenities, if there is a restaurant or lounge onsite, and even the style of bedding and linens the hotel uses!

While a one-star hotel may be substandard, the rating system is actually based on a number of different factors. For example, a one-star hotel may simply be a small, clean family-owned hotel without a restaurant.

A two-star hotel will usually be a popular chain, for example, most of the hotels near the Vancouver Airport are two star hotels like a Holiday Inn or Best Western.

A three-star hotel will usually have onsite amenities such as a pool and restaurant, and be close to the shopping district or at least a major expressway.

Four and five star hotels are much more luxurious and have perks such as valet parking, a spa and a fine dining restaurant on site.

We've chosen a memorable Vancouver hotel for each star rating, based on online and user reviews and awards:

1 Star: The Sylvia Hotel (1154 Gilford Street) is unique in that it is a well-known heritage hotel in Vancouver, located in the West End with beautiful views of English Bay, but is only a one-star hotel. The travel guide Lonely Planet notes that it is “comfortable rather than decadent,” and the rooms are small but clean and well kept. If you're at the Sylvia Hotel on July 1 or for the Celebration of Light fireworks display, request a room with a view of English Bay to see the light show. Rooms from $146 per night.

2 Stars: Ramada Inn & Suites Downtown Vancouver (1221 Granville Street): Located just a few blocks from Yaletown and right in the heart of downtown, the Ramada was built in 1906, but was completely remodeled in early 2010. The hotel is home to a popular Irish pub and there is a posh nightclub next door called Ginger 62.  Rooms from $125 per night.

3 Stars: The Listel Hotel (1300 Robson Street): Right in the Robson Street shopping district is the Listel, guests get Aveda toiletries, feature Northwest Coast Art, live jazz at O'Doul's Restaurant and Bar, whirlpool and fitness centre. From $198 per night.

4 Stars: Hotel Le Soleil (567 Hornby Street) has been winning awards for years; named by Resorts and Great Hotels Magazine as "One of the Top 100 Hotels in the World" and listed on the Conde Nast Gold List of the World's Best Places to stay. Inside each suite at this boutique hotel is Louis XVI furniture, high vaulted ceilings and beds with silk brocade coverlets, feather pillows, and down duvets. Rooms from $240 per night.

5 Stars: Shangri-La Hotel (1128 West Georgia Street). At 61 storeys, the Shangri La is the tallest building in Vancouver, with modern architecture and contemporary Asian decor. The Shangri La, which was named one of the Hot List Hotels in 2009 by Conde Nast Traveler, also houses the spacious Chi Spa and fine dining restaurant MARKET by Jean-Georges. Jean-Georges is an internationally acclaimed, three-star Michelin chef and the author of numerous cookbooks. Rooms from $325 per night.
